What Is National Rum Day?
Rum has a long and fascinating history that dates back to the 1600s in the West Indies, where large sugar cane plantations were common. During the sugar extraction process, plantations produced a thick, sticky byproduct called molasses.
As large quantities of molasses accumulated, producers discovered that it could be naturally fermented and then distilled to create an alcoholic spirit: rum.
From there, rum production became an important part of trade in the Americas. The spirit was also commonly included in the rations of sailors aboard ships transporting goods throughout the region.
Today, rum remains one of the most popular spirits in the United States and is enjoyed in countless cocktails and mixed drinks.
Types of Rum
Rum comes in a variety of styles, flavors, and colors. Knowing the differences may help you find the perfect option the next time you visit your local bar.
Before placing your order, be sure to ask your bartender or server which types of rum are available.
- White Rum is clear and light-bodied. It is typically aged briefly in stainless steel or oak before being filtered. A popular choice for mixed drinks such as mojitos and daiquiris.
- Gold Rum is aged in wooden casks and develops a deeper color along with subtle caramel and vanilla notes. It’s great for cocktails or casual sipping.
- Dark Rum is aged longer in charred barrels or blended with rich molasses and caramel flavors, with a bold, rich, and slightly sweet profile.
- Spiced Rum is infused with spices such as cinnamon, clove, and nutmeg. A popular choice for punches, cola-based drinks, and seasonal cocktails.
- Overproof Rum has a higher alcohol content than standard rum; it is typically used with care in tiki cocktails and other specialty drinks.
Rum-Based Drinks
Rum is a versatile spirit that can be enjoyed in drinks served hot or cold, making it a great choice year-round.
If you prefer to keep things simple, classic options such as a rum and Coke or a daiquiri are easy to find at many bars.
But part of the fun is exploring different flavors and combinations. If you’re looking for something seasonal, try a rum-spiked apple cider for a fall gathering with friends.
Want something more complex? Consider a Mai Tai made with aged Jamaican rum, Rhum Agricole, orange curaçao, fresh lime juice, and orgeat, a sweet almond syrup.
Whatever your preference, don’t be afraid to get creative and try something new the next time you’re at the bar.
